Mouth Hunger

There is more than one type of hunger. One type is physical hunger, where your stomach is actually growling and you feel a slight pain in your stomach. Another type is mouth hunger. This is where your body may be telling you that it doesn’t need any more food, but your mouth starts to want it and crave that taste.

This reminds me of a man named Wally that was on the first season of Extreme Weight Loss. Wally admitted to eating to the point where he wanted to throw up and to the point his jaw would hurt and he still couldn’t stop. Wally without a doubt was experiencing mouth hunger.

I think that a big reason that we experience mouth hunger is because we crave that high feeling we get from the taste that those foods give us. Usually, we crave really dense calories. For example, calories that are high in sugar or salt. When we taste them, we get such a high from it that we want to keep eating. A lot of the time it gets past the point of taste and we’re not even tasting the food anymore, we just want that pleasure of eating.

I’ve been there. It’s hard, very hard. I hope that with my blog I can inspire you to realize when you are experiencing mouth hunger. Hopefully, you can turn from that and turn to God. Please don’t think that I’m trying to preach to you, but you cannot do this alone. Turning to a Higher Power can be comforting. You know that you’re not alone.

I used to desire food way too much. I believe that God used that pain and wants me to help others dealing with that same pain. Like I said, you’re not alone. You’ve got many people, myself included, that know what you’re going through. That’s why I feel like it’s good to turn to God. The LORD can help you through the darkest of times. Reading your Bible and prayer and distract you. Also, you can pray for the wisdom to know the difference between mouth hunger and physical hunger.

Child Nutrition Act

Congress will be revising the Child Nutrition Act in September. This act makes sure that children are given fruits and vegetables, real whole grains, reduced sodium, and the right amount of calories for each meal. There are people that are lobbying to have the budget cut so children will have more cost effective food, such as refined grains and less produce.

It’s becoming more and more evident that children eat most of their meals at school. I’ve heard many times that children don’t have access to the right foods and this needs to end. Increasing nutrition in our school cafeterias won’t solve everything, but it is a fantastic start.

Make sure that there are no budget cuts when they revise the Child Nutrition Act. Find your state Senator here and email them this letter below posted by the Chef Ann Foundation.

As your constituent, I urge you to uphold the child nutrition standards established by the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act (Public Law 111-296) as the bill comes up for re-authorization this September 30, 2015. I am a _______ [state your credentials here…are you a parent? Dietitian? Do you work for a school district or in food service? Is your child, or are children in your community suffering from diet-related disease? Why is this legislation important to you?], and know from personal experience just how big of an impact the food being served at school has on the health of our nation’s kids.

The facts are real—we are facing a national health crisis that is directly linked to our diets, and staying committed to nutritious school food is key to combatting this epidemic. The CDC reports that one in three of our nation’s children are overweight or obese, and the American Heart Association notes that this generation of children will have shorter life expectancies than their parents due primarily to diet-related disease. When more than 30 million children eat school lunch every day, 13 million children eat school breakfast, and for many low-income students it is their only access to good nutrition, school food becomes a crucial part of the solution.

And what’s more, the improvements to school food are working. According to the USDA, over 90% of schools are successfully meeting the updated nutritional requirements. Studies have shown that children are not only responding positively to the healthier school lunches, but are now eating more fruits and vegetables at school, and wasting less than when before the standards were enacted. This progress needs to be encouraged; schools that are still struggling to adapt their nutrition programs need budget support and technical assistance to ultimately succeed. Providing a waiver to return to serving unhealthy meals is not the answer.

I hope I can count on you to make our children’s health a priority and 1) support an increase in funding to help schools implement the HHFKA nutritional requirements, and 2) vote against any rollbacks to the Child Nutrition Act that would weaken school nutrition standards.
